Takin, Tangjiahe NNR (Nov 2007)

Situated in the Min mountains 岷山山脉, most of Tangjiahe’s birding is between 1500m and 2,000m. Endemics include Golden Pheasant and Slaty Bunting. TJH is a good site for mammals such as Takin and Chinese Muntjac. Rusty-throated Parrotbill was rediscovered at Tangjiahe after an absence of twenty years in June 2007.

(Bjorn Anderson has successfully “twitched” these parrotbills; - a pdf trip report can be downloaded from www.travellingbirder.com.) The parrotbill site requires a hike several hundred metres uphill at the end of the Motianling 摩天岭 road (the right hand fork), which we didn’t have the time or the equipment for on this visit.http://www.travellingbirder.comshapeimage_4_link_0

Access

The direct bus for Pingwu 平武县 leaves Chengdu’s Zhao Jue Temple bus Station 成都 昭觉寺车站 at 09:00. If you tell the driver or his co-driver “Tangjiahe” they’ll know where to drop you off, the junction is about 30km down-river from Pingwu. Minivan drivers hang around at the road junction. We paid RMB 200 to one of them to be taken to Tangjiahe HQs. The road to Qingxi 青溪 was under construction and a bit muddy in Nov. 2007.
